It Takes a Library vision graphic

The Vision

We have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to create something extraordinary: a flexible, accessible library that will meet the evolving needs of every one of the 9,000 people who call greater Skaneateles home.

Regardless of age, income, gender, race, ethnicity, political affiliation, interests, or beliefs, everyone is welcome at the library. You do not need a membership to come in, and you do not need to buy something to stay. Here, belonging is free.

Our new library will be more than a building. It will be the social and intellectual  heart of our community, a place where ideas are shared, connections are made, and life long learners are nurtured.

When you make a gift, you help open these doors for everyone. Together, we can build a space that reflects our values, strengthens our bonds, and stands as a lasting symbol of what we can accomplish as a community.

Location

When choosing a spot for the future Skaneateles Library, it was a priority that the location be walkable from the village center and schools, and offer easy access with plenty of parking for those driving in. We look forward to building our new home at 75 Fennell Street, a place that will be easy for everyone to reach and access.

The Design Principles of Our New Library

people icon
Human-centered, not book-centered

Thoughtful space planning and helpful navigation that prioritize people over books will ensure a productive workplace for staff and a positive experience for visitors.

Outdoors indoors

An abundance of natural light will help breathe life into the space and cultivate a healthy environment. Incorporate plenty of plants and greenery, both outdoors and indoors.

heart icon
Surprise and delight

Spark creativity and inspire discovery with special, unexpected details throughout the space.

Flexible and versatile

Employ multi-functional design elements and furnishings to cater to ever-changing community needs. Consider things like retractable walls, glass garage door partitions, shelving on castors, modular workstations, etc.

connected icon
Curated and connected

Create distinct, thoughtful, and digitally-equipped spaces for every type of user so that they may feel connected to themselves, to one another, and to the world around them.

Future forward

Select sustainable materials, maximize efficient energy sources, and make environmentally responsible choices inside and outside the building.

Libraries aren't just buildings with shelves, they are a beacon. They are warm in the winter and cool in summer, and they are sanctuaries of possibility. They are the heartbeat of a neighborhood.
